The City of Port Coquitlam is located in the northeastern region of Metro Vancouver, which itself is located in the southwest section of British Columbia. Port Coquitlam was incorporated in 1913, and is bordered to the west and north by Coquitlam, and to the south and east by the Fraser River and the Pitt River respectively. The City of Port Coquitlam has a geographic area of approximately 28.79 square kilometres with a population of approximately 55,375 (2007).
Historically comprising mainly farmland, Port Coquitlam currently has a mix of residential, industrial and commercial uses in addition to its agricultural base. The major transportation corridor through Port Coquitlam is Highway 7 which connects Coquitlam to the west and Pitt Meadows (over the Pitt River Bridge) to the east.
