Bowen Island municipality is located at the entrance to Howe Sound, due west of the Horseshoe Bay area of the District of West Vancouver. Bowen Island is a municipality within the Islands Trust, which plans land use and regulates development within the member islands. Bowen Island forms part of the 22 municipality "Metro Vancouver" region, and is accessible by regular ferry service from Horseshoe Bay. The island has an area of approximately 5,260 hectares, has approximately 37 kilometres of coastline, and has a permanent year‐round population of approximately 3,500 people.
As the island has a relatively small population base and is primarily rural residential in nature, there are limited services on the island. However, Bowen Island offers an RCMP detachment, an elementary school, a BC ambulance station and a volunteer fire department. With a relatively mild climate and many scenic ocean and forest views, Bowen Island is a popular destination for visitors and the chosen home for many residents who commute into Metro Vancouver by ferry.
