Local Community Profile

The City of Abbotsford is located in the Fraser Valley Regional District of Southwestern British Columbia, east of Metro Vancouver and immediately north of the Washington State border. Abbotsford became a city in 1995 through the amalgamation of the Districts of Abbotsford and Matsqui. As of 2010, Abbotsford has a population of over 134,000 and is British Columbia’s fifth largest city. Abbotsford has a strong agricultural base, with a central urban core surrounded by a rural and agricultural community.

Significant regional facilities are located in Abbotsford, including the University of the Fraser Valley, the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, and the Abbotsford International Airport. The city has an area of approximately 39,043 hectares, which includes 240 hectares of parkland.

Major industries in Abbotsford include manufacturing, retail trade, construction, agriculture, health care and educational services. The key transportation corridor (the Trans‐Canada Highway) routes through Abbotsford, connecting the communities of the western Fraser Valley/Metro Vancouver, and routes into the interior of British Columbia. The Huntington‐Sumas border crossing is located in the City, and provides access into Washington State.
